Our Earth
At Starr King we instill in our families the habit of sustainable existence. We strive to minimize our footprint on the planet by reusing and recycling resources and by making environmentally conscious decisions about those items that enter the school environment. It is our hope that through education and practice we will all learn to reduce unnecessary consumption of resources and reuse/recycle necessary resources whenever possible.
Our efforts include:
- organic and/or locally grown whole food snacks
- the use of cloth napkins and real dishes vs. disposable products
- the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products (where allowed by State Licensing Requirements)
- art supplies that come from nature and/or are environmentally friendly, recycled or reusable
- compost buckets for snack waste
- a compost-fed worm bin (children are invited to interact with nature's own recycling system)
- participation in the planting and care of organic vegetable and flower gardens
- field trips to organic and environmentally minded local facilities
- parent education on environmental topics related to child and family safety
- a sustainable/green approach to all new construction projects
